I woke up to a wonderful Sunday morning and I was going to do my favorite thing to do, nothing. I was going to stay in bed till 10:00. I just laid there, thinking about anything that came to mind. Bits of stories I was working on, strategies for beating bosses in games I was playing, just anything. Everyone one else in the house had the same idea. I didn’t hear anyone moving till 9:00. I finally climbed out of bed at 10:15 and stumbled into the bathroom. I brushed my teeth, which takes longer now and filed my claws dull so I could use things easier without fear of tearing them up. After that I went to the kitchen, I was hungry. It was close enough to lunch that all I could have was a snack so I got an apple. As I munched away at my apple I turned on the TV. The first thing I saw was a news reporter talking about something and in the corner of the screen in big letters was, “Dragon Sighted.” I turned up the volume.

“A red dragon was spotted on the St. Louis Zoo yesterday. What was thought to be a joke turned out to be very real. No word on the current whereabouts of the dragon, but anyone with information on this story can call the station at this number.” said the news anchor.

“Well, well. Let’s see where this goes.” I said with a smirk.

“We have just received a report of where the dragon lives, our reporters on the way now.”

“Great,” I said aloud, “Mom, Dad, Sam, companies coming!”

It wasn’t long before the road was littered with people. Sam had gone up and shut the gate to keep them from coming up the driveway. There were far more people then were at the gift shop. I really didn’t have an idea of how to get out of this. I kind of expected this kind of reaction, but I didn’t really prepare for it.

“We are outside the suspected dragon’s home,” came from the TV, “We have not been able to get any closer due to a fence that runs around the entire property. We can see movement from inside the house, but we are not sure if it is the dragon.”

“My options are limited,” I said to my family, “I could stay inside till they leave or go out there and explain the situation and maybe they’ll leave us alone.”

“I think you should ask one of them in here to conduct an interview so that you won’t be assaulted by that crowd.” said Dad.

“Then that’s what I’ll do, but who?” I asked.

“That lady from Channel 5 seems nice, Kate Ross. How about her?” said Sam.

“Good enough for me. Get her in here.” I said with a smile.

“I’m on it.” said Sam as she darted out the door.

“Someone is coming out of the house. It’s not the dragon, but it is that girl that was seen with the dragon.” came from TV in the living room as we all watched Sam handle that situation from the dining room window.

“I’m here to get Kate Ross from Channel 5 for an interview and no one else.” she yelled at the crowd.

“I’m Kate Ross.” said a lady as she plowed her way through the crowd.

“Then come with me.” Sam said as she waved her through the gate.

Everyone else just started shouting questions, but Sam ignored them.

“Just seconds ago, Kate Ross was allowed access into the house. No telling what see will see inside.” said another reporter.

I could tell him what she was about to see, but she was going to find out soon enough. While Sam got the reporter, we got the house ready. I changed into my good outfit, the brown boots, black jeans and shirt with the red hat and coat. Mom and Dad tidied up the place and hit the all the lights. When Sam opened the kitchen door, we had just gotten squared away. I took my seat on the love seat, a small couch. I heard Sam caution Miss Ross and her camera man to stay calm in the kitchen. With that, she led them around the corner. I heard a gasp from Kate as she saw me. It’s not every day you see a mythical creature.

“Please, sit.” I told her as I motioned toward the couch next to me.

She reluctantly walked closer to me and sat down while her camera man got into a good spot. It took a minute for her regain her composure but she did.

“Well, Mr. Dragon. I thank you for allowing this interview.” she said.

“Please, call me by my name. It’s Ethan Compas.”

“Oh, well. Mr. Compas then. Well I guess I should ask the questions we all are asking. Where did you come from and what are you planning to do?”

“It all started last week. I was down in south Missouri for an airsoft operation and I happened across a cave. In this cave I found a rock.” I told her.

“How did a dragon get invited to an airsoft operation?” she asked.

“Easy, I wasn’t a dragon then.”

“You were human?”

“Correct. That rock I found. I accidentally crushed it with my hand and got the dust on me. It was then a turned into this.” I answered.

“Fascinating, so that is why we never have seen you before and why you are with humans right now.” she said as she started to get a feel for the situation.

“I’m just trying to get my life back on track, that’s all. I am not a threat; I just want to go back to the way it used to be.”

“That’s going to be hard for you.” she said bluntly.

“I’m hoping this interview will help me in that endeavor.”

“Well, it certainly helped me understand you. I can’t imagine what I would do if I was in your place.” she said smiling.

“I hope you never have to find out.” I said with a smile of my own.

“Just one more question, what’s it feel like?” she asked with curiosity in her eyes.

“I have gotten used to it. It felt weird at first, but I guess as time goes by it’ll feel more normal.”

“Well, I wish you good luck.” she said as she held out her hand.

“Thanks, I feel like I’m going to need it.” I said as I shook her hand.

With that she got up and walked out the door. I turned the TV back on and saw my house on the screen. Miss Ross was walking down the road toward the crowd.

“Miss Ross, is it in there? Is the dragon in there?” asked the Channel 4 reporter.

“Yes, he’s in there. And you should all leave. I got the one interview he’s going to do.” she said back to him.

She got into her news van and sped off down the road. The other reporters waited a good while, but soon they started leaving in droves. I guess I wasn’t all that interesting after Kate’s interview was released. Only a few people stayed till dusk, but then everyone was gone. I just stayed in the house and wrote my stories and played my games. I was more the content to wait them out.

Monday morning, Sam went out to search for anyone in the area. She did it partly for me, but mostly because she wanted to find someone to wail on for trespassing. When she came back with a clean report, we went out for a pistol game in the woods. Sam had here MP7 while I had my Colt M1911. We ended up being mostly even, but Sam pulled some tricks and managed to claw out a victory.

“Take that dragon.” she said with a smile.

“Ha, you won only because you can hide so well you raptor.” I smirked back.

After that we played Gears of War 2. We got pretty far in Horde Mode and a little farther in Co-op Mode. If you need a good right hand man, Sam is your best bet. A few rounds of Halo 3 and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and we were tired. It was only 3:17 and I was passed out on the floor of the living room. Sam walked out of her room an hour later and saw me still laying there.

“Get up you lazy dragon.” she said as she kicked my left side.

“I don’t want to.” I grumbled.

“Come on, your blocking the way to the kitchen.”

“Step over me.”

“No, I’m going to step on you.” she said as I felt her feet walk on my back.

She stepped on my head on purpose as she walked to the kitchen. I got up, rubbing my head.

“Why did you have to go and do that?” I asked.

“You wouldn’t move otherwise.” she said from the kitchen.

We ended up just watching TV the rest of the day. It was during Simpsons that Sam asked me,

“Eth, can we go to Beaver Dam tomorrow?”

“Sure, I don’t see why not.”

We decided to go after lunch. I put on my usual outfit of a gray T-shirt, blue jeans with my black John Deere hat and we drove off in my truck. I just brought money to get food from the restaurant at the park itself. We just went to the playground like we usually do. Sam played around on the swings and I climbed up to the top of one of those giant play places that seem to be a staple of parks now.

“Look at you, that thing looks so much smaller with you on it.” Sam laughed.

“I’m Godzilla!” I yelled as I walked stiffly around the platform.

It was then something terrible happened. I was hoping never to see or hear from that jerk, Ted, ever again. My hopes were dashed to pieces with the sound of a black van pulling into the small parking lot. Ted and four buddies came out. Two of them were the same guys at the OP I had told to find a better friend. Guess they didn’t listen. They were all armed with aluminum baseball bats and I didn’t think they wanted to play with us.

“Well, well. If it isn’t the scaled freak.” said Ted.

“Hello again Ted, I see you haven’t changed any.” I replied as I hopped down to the ground. “I see you two are back with him, so sad.”

“Hey, they are good friends and they will help me take you down!” yelled Ted.

“You can try, but I don’t think you can do it.” I said as I straightened my hat.

“Get him!” he yelled.

The fight was on. Ted, being the coward he is, sent three buddies to soften me up before he got to me. The first guy hit me in the chest and knocked the wind out of me. I tried to recover, but the second guy hit me in the right knee and caused it to buckle. I fell to my knees. All I could see was Sam closing in on my attackers at full speed when everything went black. Sam is the only one who can tell you what happened next and it is not something I’m proud of. I’ll let Sam take over for this point of the story.

I could see one of the big guys hit Ethan over the head and then he hit the ground. When I saw that, my only focus was on the attackers closest to by brother. I ran up behind the closest one which was on Ethan’s right side going for another attack when my foot collided with his crotch. As he fell over, I grabbed and wrenched his nose to put him down. I relieved him of his bat and swung it at the next guy which was the one who had hit Ethan in the head. It caught him in the knee, breaking his knee cap and taking him out of the fight. The guy across from me realized what I was doing and tried to attack me. He swung high and I dropped low and planted my bat into his balls. That took him down and I finished him with a knife strike to the back of the head. Ted and his buddy saw me take his other buddies down and charged me. He was too eager; he raised his bat over his head. His body was wide open and I was faster. I grabbed another bat a swung the right one into Ted’s joy area which made him double over and planted the end of my left one into his friends face. His nose broke and blood ran out like water out a faucet. I didn’t see Ted grab a radio, but I did hear him call for help. Another van came speeding straight for the playground.

The second van had five more guys in it. They bailed out and two of them ran at me while the others ran toward Ethan. They were very inexperienced; they had the bats up over their head trying for a heavy attack. I swung at the closest one and made contact with his left kidney, the next guy bought it in the shoulder which caused him to drop his bat. Two more swings was all it took to take them out of the fight. It was then I saw Ted, he had stumbled to his van and got an axe. Now he was right next to Ethan, who was still on the ground unconscious.

“This is what I should have done the second I laid eyes on you.” Ted yelled as he swung the axe right into my brother’s left side, right under his arm.

“You mother f*****.” I yelled as I charged for him.

As I ran for that son of a b****, something happened, something that I never what to see again. Ethan’s eyes flew open, but they weren’t the soft, caring eyes I knew. They looked like they were glowing with hate. He turned to see Ted and slashed at him with his claws. Because they were dull, all they did was tear his shirt and send him flying toward the sandbox. He screamed as he flew. The other three guys met similar treatment; each one flew toward the parking lot. One guy hit the van. This was not something Ethan would do. He wouldn’t slash at people. I really started to notice the fact the he had shaken off his hat, he never goes anywhere without his hat. But what really got me was the fact he was walking on all fours. That’s what clinched it, that dragon was not Ethan. I tried to see if I could talk to him, maybe calm him down.

“Eth?” I asked.

All I got was a long growl and bared teeth. There was no recognition in those eyes, just hate. I figured that the dragon instincts had taken over when that a**hole hit him with the axe. Now he was targeting any threat, I was the only one standing and I was armed. Not a good place to be. He just kept walking toward me on all fours till I guess he noticed the axe in his side. He reached over with his mouth and pulled it out. He turned back to me and bit down on the hickory handle, shattering it. I started to back toward the second van; they must have left the keys in it. I was not going to fight my brother, much less like this. I was four feet from the door when he got tired of stalking me and charged forward. This was something out of a nightmare; all I could think of doing was kicking him in the muzzle. He was a lot shorter now that he was on all fours, so I could get my foot up that high. My foot landed right where I wanted it to and since that is a soft spot, he stalled in his advance and fell back onto his hindquarters, grabbing his muzzle. I climbed into the driver’s seat and just like I thought, there were the keys. I fired it up and slammed it into reverse. I heard a roar that could only come from the dragon and I shifted into drive. I stepped on the gas and started to take off; the dragon wasn’t going to allow that and landed right on the front of the van. He blocked my whole view; all I could see was scales and teeth. I just kept going forward till I hit a pavilion. I plowed right into the supports and picnic tables. The dragon took most of the hits and snarled at me in anger.
The roof of the pavilion feel down on us and I was pinned in the van. Then I passed out.

I woke up a few minutes later. The sound of the horn and the smell of the dust and debris were the first things I remember. I broke out the driver’s side window and climbed out. People had come out to see this, there was quite a crowd. I ignored them and look at the front of the van. Pinned to the front of the van by a tangled mess of picnic tables was the dragon. He looked like he was still intact, just knocked out again. I wasn’t taking any chances; I took off my leather flame belt and strapped his muzzle shut. I went to the back of the van and looked for anything else I could use. Turned out there was a load of rope back there, I don’t won’t to know what they were planning to do with my brother, I was just happy that they were stopped. I pulled the picnic tables away and the dragon fell over onto the cement. I quickly hog tied him and tied his wings together. As I did this, two state police cars pulled up. When they saw the damage, they walked over to me.

“What happened here?” asked the tall officer.

“Those guys over there attacked me and my brother.” I replied.

“I think I need a little more than that.” said the same officer.

“Listen, my brother’s hurt and I need to get him some help.” I shot back.

“Officers, thank goodness, you can help kill that monster. Look at what it did to me.” yelled Ted as he stumbled up to the officers.

“That’s the guy that led them to attack him in the first place.” I yelled, “He wouldn’t have done a thing if you hadn’t beaten him up.”

“Hold on now, what it going on.” said the shorter officer.

“I saw the whole thing.” said a camper, “The dragon was minding his own business when these guys attacked him with bats. They knocked him out and the girl here tried to defend him, so they attacked her too.”

“Yea,” said another camper, “she fought like people do in the movies and kicked their butts. But the prick here swung an axe into the dragon’s side. That seemed to make the dragon mad and he attacked right back.”

“But then something went wrong,” said the first camper, “the dragon began attacking the girl. She had to put him down and the only way to do that was ram the pavilion. That’s when you guys showed up.”

“No, don’t listen to them. That thing is a monster. We must kill it.” screamed Ted.

“No, you’re under arrest for assault with a deadly weapon.” said the tall officer.

“But, but.” Ted stammered.

“You’re dangerous, you should not be allowed to run around attacking people.” the short officer said.

“He’s not a person, he’s a dragon!” Ted yelled as they put the cuffs on him.

“He still is a citizen of the United States and therefore protected by law.” said the tall officer as he threw Ted into the back of his patrol car.

More officers showed up and collected Ted’s friends. It would be found out later that Ted had promised them they would be hailed as heroes for capturing the dragon and forcing it to tell the locations of other dragons. Ted knew good and well Ethan didn’t know any other dragons; I don’t even want to think about what he wanted do to him. I got the Ford and pulled up next to the destroyed pavilion, with the help of the short officer, his name was Steve; we loaded Ethan into the back.

“Do you know of a place we can put him till he wakes up? I want to be certain it’s him when he comes to.” I asked.

“I really don’t think the Captain would like it if I brought a dragon into the jail. No telling the damage he might cause if he goes feral.” Steve replied.

“Fine, I guess I can take him home.” I replied.

“I’ll follow you, just to be certain you get there alright.” Steve said.

“Suit yourself.”

The drive home was longer then I remembered. I didn’t turn on the radio, I just drove. It’s a good thing I had my permit. When I pulled into the driveway, Mom must have seen the patrol car behind the Ford and figured something had happened. Mom and Dad came out and I got out of the truck. The fact I had an officer with me and I was driving told Mom something was very wrong.

“What happened?” she asked, very concerned.

“Remember Ted from the Op, he attacked us at Beaver Dam.” I replied.

“Are you guys okay?!” she asked.

“I’m fine. Ethan isn’t.” I said as I walked up to the back of the truck.

“Oh!” she yelled as she covered her mouth.

Dad stiffened as he prepared himself for what was in the back of the Ford. When I dropped the tailgate and Steve and I pulled the dragon out, they both let out gasps of shock. There was their son, hog tied and muzzle bound lying on the ground with blood all over the left side of his chest.

“What happened to him?” Dad asked.

“One of Ted’s friends hit him on the head. It knocked him out. I tried to defend him, but there were too many. Ted sunk an axe in his side.” I told them.

This broke Mom, she started crying.

“It was then things got really bad.” I said.

“How could it get worse.” asked Dad.

“Ethan woke up, or rather a part of him did.” I said, “He began to viciously attack Ted and his friends with his claws. If he had kept them sharp, he would have ripped them to pieces.”

“Oh God.” asked Mom through tears.

“Once Ted’s group was down,” I explained, “he turned his attention to the only other armed target, me.”

“He attacked you?!” Mom yelled.

“Yes,” I replied, “if I didn’t know hapkido, I wouldn’t have lasted as long as I did. I had to use one of the vans Ted’s group had to get away, but he landed on the front of the van so I rammed him into a pavilion.”

“Are you sure you are okay?” asked Mom.

“Yea.” I said. “Listen, we need to tie him to something heavy if he wakes up feral. Where are the heaviest chains?”

“In the barn.” Dad said, “We could use that hedge stump in the yard, I don’t think he could easily pull it out.”

We dragged Ethan over to the stump and chained him up to it with the heaviest chains we had. We even chained his tail to a cinder block and a chain around his neck as a choke chain. I must tell you that was pretty hard to see. My brother chained up like an animal. I never want to see that again. At about 4:30 we were all set up around the dragon. Mom was in the house, she couldn’t stand to see him like that. I had a hard time with it too. Steve was sitting on his car’s hood, Dad was on the steps to the kitchen door with the pump action and I had the over and under next to him. I heard a groan coming from the dragon. It didn’t sound like something an animal would make, but I had to be certain.

“Eth, is that you?” I asked.

I guess this is where I jump back in. My entire body hurt. I could hear Sam ask something, but I couldn’t make it out. I tried to move, but I couldn’t. It felt like I was tied up. I opened my eyes to see where I was. To my relief I was at home. But something was wrong, that last place I remembered being was at Beaver Dam.

‘How did I get home?’ I thought.

I tried to move again and I heard chains rattle. I turned to look at my hands and found them bound to my legs with rope and chains, hog tied. Those chains ran to the hedge stump in our backyard. I saw my wings were chained up too and a chain was around my neck. The worst thing I saw was right on my face. My muzzle was bound shut by Sam’s flame belt.

‘Oh God, what did I do.’ I thought as fear ran up my spine.

“Eth, is that you?” I heard Sam ask.

I tried to talk, but the belt prevented that. So all I could do was nod.

“Okay, I’m going to come over there and take that belt off your face.” she said a cautious tone. “You try to bite me, I will shoot you.”

That hit me hard, what did I do? Whatever it was, it was bad. She tugged the belt off my muzzle and I kept my mouth shut till she backed away. I didn’t know where to start. I had so many questions.

“What happened?” I asked.

“You went feral on us.” Sam said.

“I did!” I said in shock, “I didn’t kill anyone did I?”

“No,” Sam said, “be thankful you dulled your claws or else you would have.”

“Oh God, I don’t remember a thing after I blacked out!” I said, panicking.

“It’s okay, your fine now. Just calm down and let me get you untied.” she said as she started to walk over.

“No, leave me tied up, I want to know what happened before I’m released.”
She went through the whole story line by line. I could not believe I attacked her, I couldn’t believe the way I acted. I never thought I would ever act like that. Then I remembered back when I transformed, that little thing that invaded my mind, that must have been what took over me when I blacked out. That must be the dragon side of me. For the first time, I began to question if I was alone in this body. Maybe something else was trying to gain control. I began to fear myself.

“Well, that’s it.” Sam finished.

“I can’t believe it, I did all that.” I asked.

“It’s wasn’t you, it was a piece of you.” Sam said.

“It was my body, it was me. Maybe you should just shoot me now so I can’t hurt anyone else.” I said as I lowered my head to the ground.

“Don’t you ever say that again!” Sam yelled, “Don’t you dare. You’re always blaming yourself for things outside your control. Don’t you dare take the blame for this. I saw those eyes, they were not yours.”

“But, I attacked you.” I said.

“The dragon attacked me, you didn’t.” Sam said very seriously.

“She’s right Ethan, you weren’t in control of yourself.” Dad said, “You were not responsible for what you did.”

“I still feel guilty.” I sadly replied.

“Well, buck up. You can’t go around feeling sorry for yourself.” Sam said.

“What if I lose control again, what if that thing got a taste of consciousness and wants more?” I replied fearfully.

“Well, what do you feel now?” asked Dad.

I searched my head, trying to find anything out of place. I came up with nothing. Whatever took control, it was buried deep in the back of my head.

“I feel the same.”

“Well then I guess nothing changed.” said Dad.

“But what was it?” I asked hoping for an answer.

“I have theory,” said an officer that I just noticed.

“Well, Steve, what is it.” said Sam.

“Well, if he was knocked out and can’t remember what happened, then it could be that his instincts took over and dictated every action he did. That’s why he attacked Sam, he viewed her as a threat. Without his conscious mind to guide it, he was an animal operating on pure instinct.” Steve said.

“That means it wasn’t another mind, it was just a small part of my mind.” I asked.

“Yes, there is no need to worry, there isn’t a beast laying in wait in your head.” Steve said, “We all have instincts and they can come out if giving the right opportunity.”

That made me feel better. I was worried I had a very serious problem. I don’t like anything else in my head.

“So, can we untie you now.” asked Sam.

“Okay.” I sighed.

It didn’t take long to get me loose. I stood back up and flexed my sore muscles.

“It’s good to see you standing again.” said Sam.

“Why?” I asked.

“Oh, I didn’t tell you. When you were out, you were walking on all fours.” she said.
“I was!” I yelled, “Man, I’ll never live that down.”

“Relax Big Red. It wasn’t you.” she said trying to calm me down.

We walked into the house and Steve went back on patrol. He radioed in that everything was secure. I ended up just putting a large band-aid over the wound in my side, it was going to be healed up in the morning anyway. We ate dinner and watch TV. I must have said “sorry” to Sam a hundred times.

“Stop it!” she yelled.

“Sorry. Dang it!”

I went to bed thinking about the day. I couldn’t live in fear; I had to face my fears. As I fell asleep, little did I know, I was about to.

Why does this part remind me of Wolverine?
